    About Us

Character Counts Mid Shore, Inc. is a citizen-driven organization with proven, research-based outcomes, including increased academic achievement, decreased rates of poor behavior, and lowered rates of chronic school absenteeism. Our mission is to develop positive character in all aspects of students’ lives in order to prepare youth for productive futures and invest in the ongoing vitality of our local communities. This mission is achieved through the following programming:

Character Counts Mid Shore's Winners Walk Tall program invests in the futures of approximately 13,500 youth, grades PreK - Grade 12 in Talbot, Dorchester, and Caroline Counties. As a community-based program, our character education programming invests in the overall wellness and development of children by training and empowering over 160 unpaid adult volunteers to develop and model critical soft skills within the 6 Pillars of Character framework. These ''Character Coach'' volunteers enter school classrooms on a weekly or monthly basis to share personalized lessons on the topics of the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship).

Each year, CCMS partners with local philanthropists and charitable organizations to present scholarship awards to high school students particularly deserving of recognition in the areas of exemplary character and community service. These awards total in excess of $10,000 per year and are intended to help make financially feasible student next steps on their pathway toward success.
