Steve Bailey, a former editor at top newspapers who now works in Talbot County as a communications consultant, will speak on what public relations can do, what it can't do, and how to earn media attention for an organization or business.

The seminar will focus on how public relations can benefit non-profit organizations as well as businesses.   Bailey, who also teaches journalism and public relations at Salisbury University, advises non-profits and small businesses on the Mid-Shore on how to reach various segments of the public. 

"Good public relations - whether it's press releases, brochures or advice during a crisis - can give a business an edge," Bailey said, "and for non-profits, public relations can be the difference between thriving and closing down."

2010  LEGISLATIVE UPDATES 
 
Senator Colburn Senator Colburn Reports from Annapolis 
 

ANNAPOLIS - Senator Richard F. Colburn (R. Eastern Shore) reported on events that took place this week. Senator Colburn stated, "The Senate deadline for submitting bills was Wednesday, February 10 at 5:00 p.m. After that date, bills will be sent to the Senate Rules Committee before being referred to a standing committee for consideration. Over 750 Senate Bills and over 900 House Bills have been introduced thus far for the Session. The 2010 General Assembly Session is one-third over and most of the bills have been introduced.

 Snow Days

The snow made for an interesting session this week in the Maryland General Assembly. Bill hearings were cancelled so that witnesses would not have to travel to Annapolis to testify on proposed legislation however session was held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tax Credit Initiatives

The Administration's Job Creation and Recovery Tax Credit legislation (SB 106/HB 92) creates a State income tax credit for employers who hire qualified individuals during the 2010 calendar year. A qualified employee is defined as an individual who at the time of hiring is a State resident receiving unemployment insurance benefits or has exhausted unemployment insurance benefits within the past 12 months; and is not employed full time.  More

The Rural Maryland Council (RMC) is pleased to release RuralStat, an interactive web tool that allows visitors to view the general progress of individual rural counties and regions in Maryland, based on selected indicators.

February 16 - Mental Health First Aid Training February 16th & 17th at the Quaker Meeting House on Washington Street in Easton from 9 am to 4 pm.  Cost for the 12 horu training is $40 a person, which includes the comprehensive manual.  CEU's are available in certain categories.  Topics covered include substance use, eating disorders, anxiety, depression and much more.

Please join CASA volunteers and other members of the community on the 16th & 17th and learn the symptoms of a mental illness and how best to respond.  The class is limited to 25, so please respond soon if you have an interest.  Write ssherman@mhamdes.org. or call 410-822-0444.

February 21 - Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra                      3 p.m. at The Avalon Theatre. Founded in 1925, with roughly 30 members, the BMO is an ensemble of mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, mandobasses, and classical guitars. They play a mix of classical music, show tunes, marches, rags, and a variety of other light classical and popular tunes. Orchestra music is a must see at the Avalon Theatre.  $20/$15 Student/Senior

February 21 - Empty Bowls Fundraiser                     Sunday, February 21 from 5 to 7pm at the Immanual Lutheran Church in Easton, $20.  For online reservations go to www.mscf.org or mail a check made payable to Mid-Shore/Empty Bowls to:  Mid-Shore Community Foundation, 102 E. The second annual Empty Bowls Community Meal will raise money for the local food pantries to help feed people throughout our community.  In exchange for a $20 donation, you will receive a meal of home-cooked soup and the handmade bowl, created by a local artist, in which it is served.

Frederick Douglas Honor Society Information
 

The Frederick Douglass Society's next meeting will be on Monday, February 15, 2010 at 6:00pm at the Easton Welcome and Resource Center on Harrison Street. Members and community are invited to attend and learn about the major fund raisers that are planned: March 20, "Evening with Douglass" at the Avalon Theatre and May 1, The Frederick Douglass Honor Society/YMCA 10- Miler race. Both events promise great excitement for the community and the region as well as the opportunity to earn funds toward the memorial to Frederick Douglass. Discussion will also focus on the FDHS and Town of Easton's efforts to complete the contract with the memorial sculptor Jay Hall Carpenter as well as steps needed to secure the Talbot County Council's approval for the memorial design. The public is encouraged to join the Frederick Douglass Honor Society's vision of a true community-wide effort to realize the dream to Honor Frederick Douglass!  Click here to make a donation.

The employees of local energy solutions provider Tri Gas & Oil have recently donated a GMC Sierra truck to the YMCA of Talbot County. The truck is primarily being used to help the YMCA transport equipment and supplies between its Easton and St. Michaels locations. More

The laboratory at The Memorial Hospital at Easton has been awarded accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.  More

Republican Council Energy Forum 

 

Keeping Eastern Shore Lights On, Our Next Challenge - Join Talbot County residents at a free public forum to be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday February 18, 2010 at the Easton Fire House at 315 Aurora Park Drive to hear a panel of experts discuss the Eastern Shore's needs, transmission issues, fuel sources and cost to the consumer.

 

Dr. Dan M. Ervin, Director of Salisbury University's ShoreENERGY Program, will key-note the meeting. Expert panelists are scheduled to include an energy educator, a consumer advocate, an industry representative and a regulatory authority.

 

Dr. Ervin will summarize the Shore's current energy situation and what needs to be done to satisfy the region's future energy needs.

 

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council Kick Off Cookie Season with Door-to-Door Orders

 

The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay are gearing up for yet another successful Cookie Program, starting January 9, 2010! 

 

Girls begin taking cookie orders door to door on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Girls will also be taking donations of Girl Scout cookies for Operation Taste of Home and local community groups.  The Operation Taste of Home cookies will be donated to the USO for our Armed Forces stationed overseas.   Cookie booth sales will begin Friday, February 12, 2010.  Cookies are $3.50 per box.  Individuals interested in purchasing cookies or donating to Operation Taste of Home can call the Cookie Hotline at 1-800-YUM-YUM2.

One solicitation is from a company selling a map and saying they are representing the Talbot Chamber.  The Talbot Chamber has not authorized anyone to sell a map on our behalf.  
 
Another recent solicitation is from someone trying to get you to switch your telephone service.  Before you make any commitment make sure you know what your it will cost you in fees to cancel your current service provider.
